A Historic River Runs Through It

Prairie River Trout Fishing Capital

Just outside the town of Gleason in Lincoln County, you’ll find a sign that touts the “Trout Fishing Capital of the World.” Okay, someone may have exaggerated a little, but thanks to tireless restoration efforts, the Prairie River is living up to the name, supporting brook trout, brown trout and other native species.

Council Grounds State Park

Located along the Wisconsin River, Council Grounds State Park is a favorite destination for paddlers, hikers and cross-country skiers, depending on the season. The park also hosts special events throughout the year where roads are lit by candlelight, providing an ambient glow for skiers and hikers as they traverse the quiet beauty.

Lincoln County Trail System

Hundreds of miles of ATV, snowmobile and other outdoor recreation trails give you access to the untamed wilderness of Lincoln County year-round. Like many of the Center’s communities, Merrill is especially connected to its past, in both historic sites and figures. Underdown Recreation Area

Lincoln County is the outdoor destination for thrill seekers, nature lovers and conservationists, alike. Underdown Recreation Area contains trails for cross country skiers, snowshoers, snowmobilers, horseback riders and mountain bikers of all skill levels, in addition to excellent hunting and fishing spots.
